People have desk jobs. It's a reality, a necessity to get things done. However, that doesn't mean that you must succumb to rigors of what it does to your body. We all know the signs : eye strain, headaches, jaw tension, neck tension, back ache ( everywhere), edema, numbness/tingling in the extremities. And that doesn't even begin to cover what's happening on the inside, with diet, digestion, dehydration, lack of focus, fatigue and depression/anxiety. Your body and mind are so important. Without it you can't function, let alone do your good work, but there are stretches that you can do at and around your desk. Sarah Todd, LMT at our Hawthorne location, will be dispensing tips and tricks for relieving everyday tension, working from head to toe. Be sure to stay tuned up while patiently awaiting your next massage session!
First, let's begin with focused breathing. The one thing we do every day but not very well. Taking five minutes to focus your breathing at your desk every morning before you start your day, not only stimulates the circulatory system but, opens up the chest cavity, stretching both the front and back side of your body. The focus given to this simple act provides an opportunity to ground yourself mentally, and helps quell anxiety.
Step 1: Begin by putting your phone down. Find a comfortable position either in your chair or on the ground and close your eyes.
Step 2: Start with five deep breaths, inhaling slowly through your nose, expanding your chest cavity and rolling your shoulders gently back, tightening your core and exhale through your mouth.
TRY: Aveda Stress Fix Composition Oil! Put 3-4 drop in the palm of your hands, begin to warm the oil by rubbing your hands together. As you breath waft your hands near your nose for ultimate relaxation!
Step 3: Now relax the core, keeping your back straight, inhale through your nose slowly, but this time let your belly out. Expand the breath deep into your belly, and exhale audibly if you can. Continue for five times. Slowly. Allowing yourself to be in your body. Not at your desk, not at work, just you and your breathing. Focus on just that. Slowly open your eyes.
TRY: Aveda Blue Oil at the temples combined with gentle massage can help relieve tension headaches that can be the result of eye strain, poor posture and everyday stress.
