Dosha Moms and the Balance of Motherhood

Image of our Mother's Day photoshoot

This year we asked our Dosha Guests, who are moms, to join in our Mother’s Day photoshoot and share with us what life is like as a Portland Mom.

Motherhood is a full-time job that requires an immense amount of patience, energy, and love. Mothers are superheroes who wake up early, go to bed late, and tirelessly work to keep their families happy and healthy. Our Dosha Creative Team had the opportunity to pamper these moms and give them hair and makeup treatment. We also had another special mom on set, our photographer Kendra Barber gave birth to her third child earlier this year. She’s an amazing mom who balances her work and family life. This was her first shoot after giving birth and she photographed with her new baby strapped to her chest. Thank you for your dedication!

Our first mom, Destiny, has been a Dosha guest since 2007. She’s a Jewelry Designer and a mom of three boys.

Q: What led you to your career?

Destiny: I fell in love with making jewelry when I was a little girl and then when I got to college, I discovered a metal-smithing class my freshman year and knew by the end of the term this was what I was meant to do.

Q: What do you do for self-care?

Destiny: I go for a walk everyday alone and I also get a massage every 2-3 months.

Q: What is your favorite part about being a mom?

Destiny: My first thought was pulling their teeth (Before I decided to make jewelry for a living, I really wanted to be an orthodontist). But for real…. I love just watching them be humans. My three boys are hilarious, kind, and just so fun to watch.

Ash has been a Dosha guest since 2011. She spends her time as a professional photographer and is a mom of three.

Q: How do you balance motherhood and your own wellness?

Ash: Balance is always the so-called goal. In reality, I believe there are seasons. Motherhood is not something that you can exit once you enter. It’s always going to be there, although I believe that some seasons require more or less of us.

Q: What is your favorite part about being a mom?

Ash: The way they push me to be a better human. They look at me with unconditional love, even if they are mad at me. The way their curiosity leads them. They are magic humans, who I am lucky enough to see them become them.

Q: What is some life advice you can share?

Ash: Don’t sweat the small stuff, and really, it’s all small stuff. Easier said than done, but truly life is full of small moments of magic.

Nikki has been a Dosha guest since 2004. She balances her life between working as an IT Admin and being a mom of two.

Q: What do you do for self-care?

Nikki: Quiet early mornings with a cup of hot coffee, walks with my amazing girlfriends, indulging in skincare products, and basic exercise.

Q: What is your favorite part about being a mom?

Nikki:  Every single moment. The hard, the easy, the joyful, the fun. It’s all my favorite. Being their mom is my favorite.

Q: What is something you try to remind yourself of going through motherhood with young babies?

Nikki: Deep breaths and soak it up!!!

Kristin has been a Dosha guest since 2016. She is the type of person who loves bring people together. Her family is the center of that as a mom of three.

Q: What lead you to your career?

Kristin: From a young age I longed to make sense of the world: data collection my constant companion, nose in books, mind questioning everything and debating for the fun of it, considering how my world and the world could be made better.

Q: What is your favorite part about being a mom?

Kristin: Messing up. When I let go of needing to figure it all out, cease juggling all the variables to find a solution to every challenge, I’m free to pour my heart and mind into the constant of connection. This is the part that comes most naturally if I let it. Most tender are the moments when I apologize and ask for forgiveness; wisdom pours out of their young hearts.

Ways to practice self-care

Our Moms are always so busy and it’s essential to remember that it’s okay to take a break and take care of yourself as well. Self-care is essential for a balanced life and at Dosha, we can help you care for yourself.

If you are unsure where to start, we suggest booking a Massage. Our Dosha massage therapists use a series of techniques that relax the entire body, all while easing tension. To find your inner glow, we recommend getting a Personalized Facial. Our estheticians personalize your facial based on your skin's needs that will move your skin towards balance and reveal its natural beauty. If you are ready to shake things up, we suggest you Book a Consult with a Dosha Stylist. Getting your hair done can have a real impact on your self-image.

At the end of the day, we know that the effort our moms pour into their families is invaluable and taking the time to pamper yourself and give yourself some TLC is an effective way to practice self-care and prioritize your own needs. We want to take this moment to celebrate your journey and acknowledge the amazing parents you are with balance as the focal point this Mother's Day. Treat yourself this mother's day or buy a gift card for your mom. A Dosha gift card is well deserved TLC!
